Airbnb Turns to Spain's Villages as Cities Tighten Rules
11/17/2025
Airbnb is shifting its focus to Spain’s inland towns as major cities tighten short-term rental regulations. Cities like Barcelona plan to ban all short-term rentals by 2028, while Madrid and the Balearic Islands are reducing listings under new rules. To promote rural tourism, Airbnb will invest $50 million over three years to expand rental options in villages. Spain’s government is also encouraging tourists to explore inland areas, currently less visited than France, Italy, or Britain. The trend is driven mainly by domestic travelers, with interest expected to rise ahead of the 2026 solar eclipse.
