Anchorage Assembly Rejects 5% Tax on Vacation Rentals but Approves Registration Tracking
12/22/2025
The Anchorage Assembly rejected a proposed 5% tax on vacation rentals, with opponents saying it unfairly targeted short-term rental (STR) owners, many of whom rely on the income. The Assembly did approve a registration ordinance requiring STR owners to register with the Clerk’s Office. Anchorage currently has over 2,700 listings, mostly entire homes. The decision reflects tensions between housing affordability goals, tourism revenue, and protecting local homeowners who participate in the STR market.
