Ann Arbor City Council Considering Moratorium on STRs

7/28/2026

The Ann Arbor, Michigan, City Council voted 7-1 to explore a six-month moratorium on new short-term rental licenses amid concerns that unregulated rentals are reducing long-term housing availability and worsening affordability. The proposal would give the city time to study the impact of STRs and consider potential ordinance changes, following similar pauses in other southeast Michigan communities. Supporters argue that commercial STRs remove housing from the long-term market, while opponents say rentals provide valuable options for visitors, families, and university-related stays. The city will now consider drafting the moratorium and reviewing possible regulatory approaches.
