Bill 9’s First Reading to Be Scheduled After Council Fills Vacancy
11/4/2025
Maui County Council plans to schedule first reading of Bill 9, which proposes phasing out transient vacation rentals in apartment-zoned districts, after filling the vacancy left by Council Member Tasha Kama’s passing. Chair Alice L. Lee said the council aims to hold the vote in December, allowing time to appoint and onboard a new member. The bill, recommended earlier this year by Kama’s Housing and Land Use Committee, was approved as to form and legality in October. The council must fill the Kahului residency area seat by November 25, or the mayor will make the appointment. Public testimony will be heard on procedural matters at a special meeting.
