Caribbean Tourism Association Lays Out Plan to Support Short-Term Rentals

7/8/2026

Responding to sustained consumer demand, the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) recently launched a comprehensive short-term rental framework to help regional destinations more responsibly regulate and integrate the sector into national tourism strategies. "Short-term rentals are no longer a fringe part of Caribbean tourism," states CHTA President Sanovnik Destang. "The issue is not whether short-term rentals should be part of the tourism economy, but whether destinations have the right systems in place to ensure that growth is fair, safe, transparent and sustainable." The proposed framework was developed in consultation with 14 national hotel and tourism associations. It offers tools for registration, tax collection, safety standards, and data transparency. The initiative's chief aim is to capture the economic benefits of local property ownership while addressing revenue losses.
