Chatham County, GA, Approves 120-Day Moratorium on New STRs
7/14/2026
Chatham County, Georgia, commissioners have responded to residents' concerns by approving a 120-day moratorium on new short-term vacation rentals. County officials say the pause will give commissioners sufficient time to craft clearer guidelines for rental homes. District 4 Commissioner Brian Hussey, whose district sits between Savannah and Tybee Island and who owns an STR there, said he believes the moratorium will result in guidelines that benefit all. He commented, “We realized very quickly that we needed more time to work on this, get public input, and come up with a good long-term solution for everyone, both the owners of short term rentals and the neighbors where short-term rentals exist.” It should be noted that anyone with an existing STR or presently going through the approval process will not be impacted by the moratorium or any changes that follow. Commissioners are hopeful it will not take the full 120 days to arrive at a solution.
