One of Chicago’s wealthiest North Shore suburbs, Winnetka, has advanced an ordinance to prohibit short-term rentals village-wide—and it’s at the adoption stage, not the “let's talk about it” stage. That means the municipality isn't floating the idea; it’s on the doorstep of making it law. There’s little in the agenda to suggest a middle-ground compromise is on the table.

Why It Matters: Full bans are rare, and full bans that clear the adoption hurdle are rarer still. Affluent, low-density suburbs like Winnetka punch above their weight as models. When a community with this profile writes a clean prohibition, other suburbs facing resident pressure have a ready-made template to copy. The precedent risk here is much bigger than Winnetka’s actual rental market.
