DeKalb County, GA, Launches STR Licensing Program

5/26/2026

The DeKalb County, Georgia, Planning & Sustainability Department launched a new short-term rental (STR) licensing program requiring owners and operators in unincorporated county areas to obtain a license within 30 days starting May 20, 2026. The rules apply to rentals listed on platforms for stays under 30 days. Operators must designate a 24-hour local contact; follow noise, parking, nuisance, and safety regulations; and pay an 8% hotel/motel excise tax monthly. The county also banned STRs from functioning as party houses or event venues, and properties in designated historic districts are ineligible. Applications must be submitted annually through the county’s business license division using the newly launched online portal.
