Greensboro Drops 750-Feet Rule for Short-Term Rentals After Property Owner Sues City

3/5/2025

In North Carolina, the City of Greensboro was sued last year over its short-term rental rules by a Maryland man who owns property in the city. His lawsuit claimed that the city's rule requiring at least 750 feet between any two short-term rentals was against state law. The Greensboro City Council voted to eliminate that portion of the short-term rental regulations, but owners are still required to pay a fee for a short-term rental license and agree to limit the number of people per room and limit the number of parking spaces used by renters. Residents are concerned about the impact of short-term rentals on housing availability and affordability, but Chuck Watts, the Greensboro city attorney, said that the 750 foot provision left the city vulnerable to litigation, and without it, the remaining zoning rules remain intact.
