Hawaii County Council Orders STR Study Amid Policy Reform
7/29/2024
The County of Hawaii will conduct a study on the economic impact of short-term rentals (STRs) on the Big Island after the County Council passed a resolution to request the study. The measure says that information will help guide policies about rentals and their impact on residents, property owners, and visitors. The study will look at daily rental use data and the effectiveness of converting STRs into long-term housing. The Council is considering a package of bills that would introduce or change fees, fines, and operational rules for rental units. Many homeowners have asked Council members to first study the impacts of STRs on the island before making drastic changes. The study is due to the County Council by February next year.
