Airbnb and other platforms have been lobbying to relax regulations, arguing hotels may lack capacity and cities could benefit economically. However, many cities—including Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Kansas City—have maintained or strengthened registration, licensing, and occupancy restrictions to protect housing supply. Officials and community groups are resisting permanent deregulation, fearing World Cup–related exceptions could be extended after the tournament ends.
