Local Guests Carry Greatest STR Damage Risk

10/27/2026

According to Truvi’s 2026 STR Risk & Resilience Report, short-term rental damage risk varies by guest location, booking timing, and property characteristics. Analyzing more than 95,000 protected bookings, the study found guests booking within 20 miles of home were 72% more likely to cause damage, while same-day bookings carried 60% higher risk. Houses were 2.4 times more likely than apartments to experience incidents, and properties with five or more entertainment amenities had over twice the average risk. Direct booking risk also increased to 1.85 times average, highlighting the need for stronger screening. Findings reflect Truvi’s dataset, not the entire market.
