In the competitive world of professional vacation rental management, standing out from the crowd is crucial. But how do you get your website and brand to the top of search engine results where guests can find you and book directly? That’s where SEO, or search engine optimization, comes into play. It’s the most powerful marketing channel that can propel your vacation rental business to new heights.
At my company, it’s extremely rare that we work on a project or client that is earning a significant portion of their bookings directly and isn’t ranking well in search and driving meaningful organic traffic to their website.
SEO isn’t just about tricks and hacks, but many can get confused by much of the jargon that surrounds the channel. In this article, we’ll break down SEO into four primary categories that help you focus on the elements that move the needle and get more traffic.
Whether you’re a seasoned property manager or a newcomer to the vacation rental industry, understanding SEO can be the game-changer to earning more traffic and getting more direct bookings.
So, let’s dive into the world of vacation rental SEO, unlocking its secrets and learning how to harness its power to build up more bookings.
Understanding Vacation Rental SEO
Diving deeper into the world of SEO, especially in the context of the vacation rental industry, enables us to extract maximum benefits from it. My role will involve unraveling the complexities and revealing how SEO works and its significance for vacation rental businesses.
What Is SEO?
Search engine optimization serves as a critical tool in your direct booking marketing tactics. It refers to the practice of enhancing a website’s visibility on search engine results pages (SERPs). SEO entails using various strategies, such as keyword research, on-page SEO, including crafting powerful title tags and meta descriptions for web pages, and executing link-building tactics.
In 2018, I coined the simple framework called “TLCK”: technical SEO, link building, content creation, and keyword research to place each area of SEO into one of those core buckets.
While SEO can be complex at the margins, the core practices that help a website rank well in search haven’t changed much at all in the last decade:
- Use best practices for technical SEO based on Google’s guidelines.
- Understand your core target guest/future potential guest audience.
- Research what terms they use in Google to find and plan their trip to your destination.
- Build that content on your website.
- Let others know about your site and earn links through outreach and brand marketing.
As a vacation rental management company, understanding and leveraging SEO can propel your brand to the forefront, attracting more guests, creating memorable experiences, and, ultimately, boosting your revenue.
Key Elements of Vacation Rental SEO
In building your vacation rental business, it’s crucial to leverage vacation rental SEO. This approach comprises several core elements mentioned previously: TLCK.
Each component targets different aspects of your vacation rental website, propelling it toward higher visibility in search engine results pages.
Technical SEO
On-page SEO, or technical SEO, encompasses optimizing the content and the technical elements of your vacation rental website. For content, use the right keywords in page titles, meta descriptions, and the text on your web pages. For example, if I’m targeting the keyword “vacation rentals in Hilton Head,” I ensure it appears within my content and meta descriptions.
While a technically “perfect” website sounds nice, the truth is that no vacation rental website is ever perfectly optimized or has everything correct. Therefore, the goal with this portion of your SEO efforts is to make the site as solid and performant as possible given the time, budget, and often CMS constraints that you’re working with.
Tools like Ahrefs Site Audit tool and Screaming Frog are extremely useful tools to identify any technical SEO errors or problems. Technical errors like broken links, non-loading pages, and thin or blank pages are often the most common and fixable areas that can improve the general SEO health of a vacation rental website.
Regarding technical SEO, it’s about enhancing website functionality for better user experience. This task includes faster page loading times, mobile friendliness, and proper use of sitemaps. It ensures your vacation rental website doesn’t just look good but also functions seamlessly for every user, regardless of the device they use to access your site.
Link Building
Link building represents actions taken outside of your website to improve its rankings, mainly through backlinks: other websites linking to yours. I’ve found that the relevance of links to the page content and overall site is just as important as the core metrics of that link.
For example, a link on travel blogs that have written articles about your specific market or area destination work well to drive authority and improve rankings. Links from highly popular but irrelevant pages don’t move the needle rankings-wise nearly as much.
Link building can be tedious, and the most challenging part of the process is that time spent does not equal output. It’s possible to send 1,000 outreach emails to travel bloggers and get zero links, then send 500 the following month and earn 15 links.
If your vacation rental website is new and you have highly established competitors, then link building is likely the weakest link in your SEO approach, so it’s worth spending extra time and resources to build more links. More established vacation rental brands have the benefit of time and previous efforts, so they likely have already earned hundreds if not thousands of different backlinks over a long period of time.
Keyword Research
Keyword research forms the foundation of a vacation rental SEO strategy. It involves identifying relevant keywords that potential guests use when looking for a vacation rental. Crucial to this process is understanding the language and specific search terms your target audience uses. Tools like Semrush or Ahrefs can be instrumental in finding both high-volume and long-tail keywords with less competition but targeted specificity.
For example, instead of only targeting a term like “vacation rental,” you will likely opt for more specific phrases such as “vacation home in Florida” or “short-term rental in Seattle.” It bolsters SEO efforts while also catering to guests who have a clear idea of where they want to spend their vacation.
Keywords that you want to rank for can likely span both informational and content-first keywords like “things to do in San Diego” alongside keywords like “San Diego Vacation Rentals.” The best brands focus on both types of keywords as a way to build topical authority and rank better in search across a variety of topics.
Content Creation
While understanding what keywords to target with each page is useful, nothing will happen unless a page is created to target that keyword properly on your website! The best local vacation rental brands winning with SEO often create a huge number of targeted landing pages or other blog posts and resources on their website. For example, a blog post would be the ideal page content format for targeting a keyword like “best things to do in North Myrtle Beach,” whereas a page showing listings or properties is ideal for a page targeting “North Myrtle Beach condo rentals.”
Understanding which page type is needed for each keyword is key to having success with content creation. We leverage Clearscope to help create winning content and audit SERPs to see what formats will work best for a given query.
A word of caution: Many who are new to SEO think that long content is always better than short content, but this isn’t always the case. In fact, much of our testing has led us to shorten pages that are often too wordy and long and focus more on the user intent of the pages ranking in Google search results. Don’t assume that longer is better when it comes to content creation. Instead, focus on making pages as useful and comprehensive as possible.
Measuring Success with Vacation Rental SEO
In the channel of vacation rental SEO, gauging success is about translating data into actionable insights. Analyzing your SEO is paramount to ensure your vacation rental business stays on the path to increased organic traffic and direct bookings.
SEO Analytics and Tracking
Embracing SEO analytics and tracking tools is a prerequisite for measuring vacation rental SEO success. Tools like Google Search Console (GSC) offer essential SEO data about your vacation rental website.
For instance, GSC will show you impressions and click data on a query and page URL level to measure overall performance. On a keyword level, GSC can also offer a simple form of rank tracking, showing you where Google is ranking your website in the search results over a given time period.
I’ve found that while it’s often hard to go from zero to the very top of Google quickly, you absolutely will see progress along the way in terms of showing more impressions and clicks in the search results.
Beyond GSC, you can also use third-party rank tracking tools that scrape Google to show data of where you rank for a given keyword.
Identifying Areas for Improvement
Finally, every successful SEO effort rests on consistently identifying and rectifying areas of improvement.
GSC offers in-depth insight into your website’s functionality, flagging issues like slow load times and broken links that may impede your SEO efforts. By remedying these issues promptly, you enhance the functionality and user experience of your vacation rental website, strengthening its appeal to both the guests and search engine algorithms.
Conclusion
At this point, I hope you see the power of SEO in any vacation rental marketing strategy.
It’s not just about getting your site seen but enhancing the entire guest journey. From the moment a potential guest starts their search, a well-optimized site guides them smoothly toward booking.
They’ll find you faster, navigate your site easier, and get a better overall experience. SEO even lets you showcase the best of what’s around your properties. It’s a win-win situation for both the guest and the vacation rental business.
But remember, SEO isn’t a one-time task! It’s an ongoing process that needs dedication and regular updating. Keep TLCK in mind, and focus on building your approach over the long-term to earn the long-term rewards.
