Michigan Files a Bipartisan Statewide STR Registry Bill

7/22/2026

What is it?

HB 6026, introduced June 2 by Rep. Joey Andrews (D) with Republican co-sponsorship and tie-barred to HB 6027, would establish a statewide STR registry and database. It follows Andrews' 2024 package (HB 5437–5446), which paired state registration through LARA with a new 6% excise tax and platform enforcement—provisions that drew strong opposition from Michigan REALTORS and the state's STR association.

Why does it impact me?

The bipartisan, registry-focused reboot suggests sponsors are trying to pass the data infrastructure first and fight the tax battle later — a sequencing members have seen succeed elsewhere. A statewide registry itself is manageable for professional operators, but it becomes the enforcement backbone for whatever comes next. Michigan members should engage early in the Government Operations Committee to shape registry design and keep excise tax provisions from riding along.
