Missouri Bills Would Prevent Short-Term Rentals From Paying Commercial Property Tax

2/16/2026

Some Missouri legislators are attempting to ensure people renting out their homes to World Cup travelers this summer do not get hit with a big property tax surprise. Sen. Maggie Nurrenbern's (D-Clay County) recently introduced Senate Bill 1088 and companion Senate Bill 1066 and House Bill 1768 all aim to regulate the county assessor's abilities to reclassify residential properties rented for less than 30 days as commercial ahead of the World Cup. Nurrenbern comments, "We need more people to rent out their properties to ensure a successful World Cup. So our legislation is just to help in this direction for individuals to make a little extra income during the World Cup." The bills, which aim to provide clarity for short-term rental property owners statewide even beyond this summer, reportedly have bipartisan support and could be passed and signed before the start of the World Cup.
