Concerns have been raised about Monroe County's decision to opt out of New York State's new short-term rental registry law, as the move leaves residents without critical data, enforcement tools, and tax transparency. County officials, though, counter that opting out is necessary to protect millions of dollars in annual revenue. The state legislation was introduced as a matter of urgency during the budget process. It created a statewide registration system for short-term rentals (STRs) and required platforms like VRBO to collect and remit sales tax.
