New Bill Would Hike Oregon’s Lodging Tax to Protect Imperiled Wildlife, Habitat
12/22/2025
Oregon lawmakers plan to revive a bipartisan bill that would raise the state lodging tax on rentals, including hotels, campgrounds and short-term vacation rentals. The proposal would increase the tax from 1.5% to 2.75%, adding a small cost to overnight stays while generating tens of millions of dollars a year. Supporters say the higher tax on rentals would fund wildlife and habitat conservation programs and compensate ranchers for wolf-related losses. Backers argue the increase would have minimal impact on travelers or rental demand, amounting to only a few extra dollars per stay. Opponents, including lodging and restaurant groups, warn that higher rental taxes could hurt tourism and local economies. The bill, which previously passed the House but stalled in the Senate, is expected to return in the 2026 legislative session.
