NYC Business Leaders Renew Push to Ease STR Restrictions
10/6/2026
New York City business groups are urging the City Council to loosen restrictions on short-term rentals, arguing that the rules have reduced temporary housing options and hurt tourism. Chambers representing Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and other boroughs want changes that would preserve a primary-residence requirement while allowing more homeowners to rent their properties. The restrictions, enacted in 2025, generally prohibit stays under 30 days unless hosts are present. Supporters say the rules target illegal rentals, noise, and housing displacement, while Airbnb and business groups argue they limit tourism and homeowners’ income. Mayor Zohran Mamdani supports maintaining the restrictions.
