Orleans County, New York, has voted to opt out of a state-mandated short-term rental (STR) registration system, meaning local officials will not participate in the statewide tracking program for vacation rentals for now, though they can join later if they reverse the decision. At the same time, county lawmakers approved a separate measure expanding the hotel and motel occupancy tax to include STRs, bringing them under the same local tax framework as traditional lodging.
