Salt Lake City Moves to License STRs for First Time

6/23/2026

Salt Lake City has approved its first comprehensive licensing system for short-term rentals, with rules set to take effect July 1. The new framework requires hosts to obtain an annual business license, pay fees, and comply with safety, zoning, and operational standards aimed at reducing neighborhood disruptions and improving enforcement. Key rules include a minimum two-night stay requirement, a cap of 200 rental nights per year, occupancy limits tied to fire and building codes, and a requirement for at least one off-street parking space. Hosts must also provide 24/7 local contact information and allow inspections. STRs remain largely restricted in residential neighborhoods but are allowed in mixed-use and commercial zones.
