Santa Cruz County Supervisors Advance New Limits on Vacation Rentals
8/11/2025
The Santa Cruz County (California) Board of Supervisors on August 5 advanced new restrictions on short-term rentals to maintain housing stock and engage with complaints about misbehaving vacationers. Supervisor Manu Koenig and Supervisor Justin Cummings led the effort to develop the proposed rules, which include a new cap on STR permits. These changes would apply to unincorporated areas of the county, not the cities of Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Capitola, and Watsonville, which have their own rules for STRs. The measure is scheduled for final adoption on August 19 and would then require approval from the California Coastal Commission.
