Schenectady Co., NY, Launches New STR Registry

New York’s Schenectady County Department of Finance has launched a new online registry for short-term rentals (STRs) to simplify compliance and improve tax collection. The system requires property owners renting homes for fewer than 30 days to register their units and obtain a Certificate of Authority before collecting occupancy taxes. The initiative follows 2024 state legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul aimed at regulating STR markets and strengthening occupancy tax systems. Once registered, hosts must file monthly reports and remit taxes by the 20th of each month.
