STR Owners Suing over Glen Ellyn Ban Get a Reprieve
1/12/2026
A federal judge has ruled that Chicago suburb Glen Ellyn’s ban on short-term rentals (STRs) cannot be enforced against a homeowner who is challenging the ordinance in court. The decision allows Blakelick Properties to continue operating a five-bedroom house as an STR while its lawsuit proceeds. Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman said the ban could amount to an unconstitutional “taking” if it prevents the owners from using the property economically. The village argues the home could be rented long term, but the owners say there is no viable market for a house of that size. The ruling follows earlier court action temporarily blocking the ban and stems from a broader dispute over the village’s STR prohibition.
