The Irresistible Rise of STRs in Europe
9/2/2025
European Union short-term rental bookings reached a record 854 million overnight stays last year, up 18.8% from 2023 and surpassing the 512 million nights of 2019. France led with 192 million nights, followed by Spain (171 million) and Italy (127 million), with domestic travelers driving much of France’s volume. Germany saw the highest growth at 22.6%. International tourists accounted for 62% of nights, below pre-pandemic levels. The 20 most visited regions represented 47% of all nights, led by Andalusia, Croatia’s Adriatic coast, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Paris topped urban destinations with 23.5 million nights. Growth persisted into early 2025 but showed signs of slowing, with Q1 up only 4.8%, partly due to Easter holiday shifts, suggesting a moderation in the post-pandemic surge of short-term rentals across Europe.
