Two-Thirds of STR Operators Paid for Guest Damage Repairs Themselves

9/8/2026

Hospitable research found that guest damage remains a major financial risk for short-term rental operators. Sixty percent of hosts and property managers experienced guest-caused damage in the past year, with 36% reporting multiple incidents. Among those affected, 66% had to pay repair costs themselves because insurance or booking platforms did not cover the damage. The research also shows growing technology consolidation: 56% of operators use two or three separate systems, while 30% stopped using at least one standalone tool after property management software added similar features. Meanwhile, 60% trust or are willing to trust AI to act on their behalf, including 84% for pricing decisions, 70% for owner reports, and 68% to identify underperforming listings.
