U.S. Cities Collect $935M in STR Taxes, Fees, Fines
7/6/2026
According to a new report by government transparency organization OpenTheBooks, U.S. local governments have collected more than $935 million in taxes, registration fees, and fines from short-term rentals since 2019 across more than 20 cities and counties. The majority, about $845 million, came from occupancy taxes paid by guests, while the rest came from licensing fees and enforcement penalties. Some jurisdictions, including Clark County, Nevada, and Palm Springs, California, have generated millions in fines, highlighting active enforcement. Registration costs also vary widely, ranging from about $150 in Atlanta to $1,600 in Hermosa Beach. The report argues that complex regulations and higher fees may discourage homeowners from entering the short-term rental market.
