Vienna to Tighten Short-Term Rental Rules Next Summer
8/30/2023
As the number of visitors flocking to the Austrian capital of Vienna approaches pre-pandemic levels, the city is moving to exert tighter control over short-term rentals. Beginning in July of next year, property owners and hosts will be prohibited from leasing out individual units for more than 90 days annually. According to Tourism Vienna spokesperson Walter Strasser, the restriction will "help make sure entire dwellings are not taken off the housing market." The regulation also levels the playing field for short-term rentals across the city. Units in residential zones have been operating under a 90-day limit for the past five years, while those in other city zones have been exempt from the requirement. Property owners or hosts will be able to apply for exceptions to the 90-day cap.
