Airbnb Sets Up $250 Million Fund to Invest in Housing Construction
Airbnb is committing an initial $250 million to a Housing Accelerator program designed to provide gap financing for housing developments, with priority given to affordable and mixed-income projects. The first investment, $6.4 million, will support about 200 affordable units in a larger development in Austin, Texas. Airbnb says the program will primarily focus on the U.S., with investments generally representing about 10% of project capital. The company expects the initial fund to generate up to $5 billion in capital over a decade as returns are reinvested. The initiative will also support efforts involving zoning, permitting, building codes, housing data, and technology.
