Another Onondaga County, NY, Town Bans STRs
DeWitt, New York, has unanimously approved a law banning short-term rentals such as Airbnb in all residential zones, effective January 1, 2027. Existing operators may honor reservations until then, but officials encouraged them to stop sooner. The town previously lacked a clear prohibition, making enforcement difficult. Recent complaints about noise, traffic, parties and parking helped prompt the measure. Supporters argued STRs are incompatible with residential neighborhoods, while some residents favored regulating individual problem properties instead. Onondaga County planners had suggested permits and regulations, but town officials said enforcement and inspection costs would be too high. Many other communities in central New York have laws restricting or prohibitingSTRs, including Liverpool, Salina, Camillus, Skaneateles, and Cazenovia.
