Austin City Council Delays New STR Rules, Awaiting State Legislation
The Austin City Council has decided to delay implementing some new regulations for short-term rentals (STRs) as they await potential legislative action from state lawmakers. Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes highlighted the issue of illegal STRs, saying there are more than 10,000 unlicensed in the city. To address the issue, the city plans to shift STR regulations from the land code to the business code, which is expected to simplify enforcement. This rule has been approved but will not take effect until October. Additionally, starting April 1, the city will begin collecting hotel occupancy taxes from rental platforms.
