Greenville County, SC, Moves Closer to First STR Ordinance
Greenville County, South Carolina, is moving toward establishing its first regulatory framework for short-term rentals in unincorporated areas. A County Council committee reviewed a draft ordinance that would require STR operators to register with the county and provide property and operator information, as well as proof of state and county accommodations tax registration. The proposal would place administration of the program with the county zoning office and could establish additional compliance and enforcement requirements as the ordinance is refined. County officials estimate approximately 1,200 STRs currently operate in unincorporated Greenville County.
Why it matters: Creating a new regulatory structure could establish significant registration and compliance obligations for professional managers. Engagement while the ordinance is still being developed provides an opportunity to shape the final requirements.
