Maui Planning Commission Denies New Hotel Districts for STRs
The Maui Planning Commission voted against creating two new hotel zoning districts, H-3 and H-4, which would have allowed thousands of short-term rentals to keep operating. The decision follows Bill 9, passed in December, which phases out about 7,000 transient vacation rentals in apartment-zoned districts. Supporters argued the new districts were needed to protect local businesses and prevent economic fallout, while opponents emphasized the urgent need for long-term housing for residents. The recommendations will now go to the Molokai and Lanai Planning Commissions, but the final decision rests with the Maui County Council.
