Mecosta County Clarifies Authority on Short-Term Rental Property
The Mecosta County, Michigan, Planning Commission will no longer consider special use requests for short-term rentals. The Commission began to look more closely at the county ordinances to determine if approval of a special use permit was the proper path for short term rentals and had requested a moratorium in the meantime. During a Board of Commissioners meeting April 18, the board voted to deny the moratorium based on a new understanding that rentals are not under the purview of the county zoning. Building and Zoning Director Annette Coles told the board that after doing research and conferring with the county legal counsel, it was determined that short term rentals fall under the authority of the cities, villages, and townships, and not under the authority of the county.
