Michigan County Joins Statewide Push for Accommodation Tax
Houghton County commissioners are considering a resolution supporting Michigan legislation that would give counties authority to impose local accommodation taxes on hotels, motels, short-term rentals, and other transient lodging. The proposed tax would allow counties to retain revenue for infrastructure, public services, parks, and public safety costs associated with tourism, shifting some financial burden from permanent residents to visitors. Current Michigan law restricts local lodging taxes and generally directs existing revenues toward tourism marketing and convention facilities. The resolution follows similar action by Grand Traverse County and growing interest among Michigan tourism communities. The measure would not create a Houghton County tax immediately; state lawmakers would first need to authorize the framework.

Why It Matters: Giving counties new taxing authority could mean additional costs for STR operators across Michigan. Because state legislation is required, this is an issue worth watching beyond Houghton County.
