New York County Considers 4% Bed Tax for Short-Term Rentals
Oswego County, New York, is considering a 4% bed tax on short-term rentals (STRs) to boost tourism revenue. The county recently launched an STR registry requiring property owners to register and pay a $50 fee, with applications reviewed within 30 days. If approved, the tax could generate hundreds of thousands of dollars, supplementing the $785,000 already budgeted from traditional hotel and motel taxes. Collecting a bed tax from short-term rentals would require passing a new local law, which could happen as soon as the public hearing in May.
