New York Short-Term Rental Regulations Start in 2025
A new regulation targeting short-term rentals (STRs) will take effect in New York state in March, after Gov. Kathy Hochul signed S885C/A4130C, requiring hosts to add their properties to a registry. The law creates the nation’s first statewide STR registry, defining an STR as a residential unit rented for under 30 days. STR owners or operators must register with the Department of State or a municipal system. Any booking service that facilitates such rentals also has to verify registrations and registration numbers and remove any listings for unregistered properties.
