Polk County, NC, Planning Board Rejects Proposal to Allow STRs in RE-5 District
The Polk County, North Carolina, Planning Board voted 5–2 to reject a zoning amendment that would have allowed residential short-term rentals in the RE-5 district, leaving the current ban in place. The proposal sought to permit STRs with restrictions on occupancy, parking, signage, and operator residency, arguing that RE-5 property owners face limitations not imposed elsewhere in the county. During nearly three hours of discussion and public comment, opponents argued that RE-5 zoning was specifically designed to preserve the district’s low density, rural character, privacy, and stability. Many said they purchased property with the expectation that STRs would not be allowed nearby. Supporters contended that responsible STRs could provide property owners with additional income and flexibility without disrupting neighborhoods. Although some board members suggested a special-use permit process as a compromise, the board ultimately rejected the amendment, maintaining existing restrictions on vacation rentals in the district.
