Proposed Indy Ordinance Would Create Registry of STR Owners
A new proposed ordinance that would keep a registry of short-term rentals (STRs) in Marion County, Indiana, just passed the Metropolitan Economic Development Council. The registry would allow the Indianapolis Department of Business and Neighborhood Services to enforce a three strike policy that is already in place through the state legislature. If an STR reached three strikes, the owner’s permit to rent would be taken away for the rest of the year. Local STR owner Jim Borthwick is in favor of the ordinance. ”Any positive legislation that helps encourage the host community to be good neighbors I’m all for it,” said Borthwick, who is also the creator of the Indiana Short Term Rental Alliance. Borthwick said House Bill 1035, Indiana legislation that limited local control of short-term rentals, has helped make Indiana an attractive place for out-of-state investors. ”I think that has added to the neighborhood angst when it comes to not really being sure who your neighbor is any more or if there is a situation that does come up who do I contact,” Borthwick said.
