South Lake Tahoe Updates Vacation Home Rental Policy
The city of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., has approved and updated its vacation home rental policy. This ordinance, which takes effect July 17, will allow vacation home rentals to stay in neighborhoods but with tighter rules for property owners and visitors. "A hundred percent, it's been a lack of enforcement that caused this entire problem. Back in 2018, people were upset because the city didn't enforce their rules and regulations, so you had party houses that went uncontained, people got upset," said Mark Salmon, a realtor and member of the South Tahoe Property Owners Group, which filed a lawsuit against Measure T, a provision passed by voters into law in 2018. The measure essentially banned vacation home rentals outside of the tourist core once the last permits expired in 2021. In March, a judge ruled against the measure, which led the city of South Lake Tahoe to pass an ordinance allowing rentals in residential neighborhoods once again.
