STR Legislation in MD County Stalls Without Support
The Talbot County, Maryland, Council remains divided over short-term rental regulations, with proposed legislation failing to advance. Council members Pete Lesher and Lynn Mielke have sought stricter rules since 2025, citing concerns about the growing number of rentals in high-tourism areas. Their original proposal included seven-night minimum stays, occupancy logs, landline requirements, and limits on rental concentration. The Planning Commission removed most restrictions, and the revised bill was later withdrawn. A new proposal based solely on the commission’s recommendations was presented Tuesday, but procedural requirements meant it first needed to return to the commission. Mielke moved to send it back, with Lesher seconding, but other council members declined to support the motion. With no consensus, Talbot County’s STR regulations remain unchanged.
Why it matters: The failure to advance new restrictions preserves the county’s existing STR framework for now. It also shows that proposals such as minimum-stay requirements and concentration limits can face significant political resistance.
