Airbnb announced that starting next March, hosts in Berlin, Germany, must obtain a property registration number for long-term rentals. Properties being rented for at least three months have to display a valid registration number on their online listings. Hosts can go to their district office to apply for a rental permit, which includes the registration number. Last year, a study by the German Institute for Economic Research found the rental costs of an apartment in Berlin rose 13 percent when located in the immediate vicinity of an Airbnb long-term rental. The growing inventory of Airbnb long-term lets is driving up rates by reducing the amount of available housing. Meanwhile, about 10,000 apartments were being rented on monthly basis in Berlin, which account for about 0.5 percent of all accommodation in the city.
