The Vacation Rental Management Association (VRMA), released the following statement in response to Idaho Governor Butch Otter’s signing of House Bill 216:
“Idaho officials have taken a great step in ensuring greater regulatory compliance with the passage of House Bill 216,” said Mike Copps, executive director of VRMA. “This bill is a forward-thinking approach that places Idaho in the forefront of the short-term vacation rental marketplace. Residents of Idaho should be proud of their state leaders for their efforts to create more economic opportunity and inclusiveness while protecting property rights,” Copps continued.
Idaho’s House Bill 216 prevents localities from banning short-term rentals. It also provides mechanisms to collect taxes and allows local governments to determine the specific details of short-term regulations in their communities. Vacation rentals have been a mainstay of the tourism industry for decades, and this bill protects primary and secondary home owners’ rights to rent their properties.
Maureen Regan, president of VRMA added that “short-term vacation rentals historically have served as a major part of the travel and tourism industry. It is good to see that states like Idaho are taking steps to protect the property rights of homeowners and the greater tourism industry.” She further stated that “VRMA supports short-term rental regulations that are clear and easy to understand. Creating a set of rules as a standard, statewide, will allow managers to ensure that their properties are in compliance. Idaho has done just that!”
