Wildfire Impacts Result in Decrease in Maui Vacation Rental Supply, Demand for August

The Maui wildfires that occurred in Lahaina on Aug. 8 led to many vacation rental units in West Maui becoming unavailable for the rest of August, resulting in dramatic decreases in unit night supply and unit night demand in the West Maui area. In August 2023, Maui County vacation rental supply decreased to 177,600 available unit nights. Unit demand fell to 84,400 unit nights, resulting in 47.5 percent occupancy. Vacation rentals across Hawaii reported increases in supply, with lower demand, average daily rate, and occupancy compared to the year prior.
